I have had two conversations recently when someone approached me about something and they were not telling the truth. They weren’t meaning to lie, per se; they were just misinformed.

When People Are Misled

The first one was a woman who told me that unaccredited homeschool students could not apply to Kennesaw State University for college. I know for a fact that is not true, because I know several kids who currently attend KSU and they did not have an accredited high school transcript.

The second woman said that her daughter would be taking Biology at a well-known co-op in our area. This mom said that someone told her that there was a problem with accrediting the science classes at this school because the science teachers do not give you back the tests. That’s not true! In fact, at this school, parents can get a complete grade report of everything the student did and that is more than enough in order for us to accredit the course at ACA West, where I work on accredited transcripts.

In both instances, I said, “That’s not true!” quite fervently! How could I be so fervent about it? Because I had first-hand knowledge of what the truth actually is and I was confident of it. I might have even been a little too harsh with the way I quickly blurted it out. Flat-out sure of the answer, I couldn’t help myself!

How This Applies To Teaching Teens

Ever feel that way when talking to your teens? Our culture is telling them a LOT of lies about a multitude of topics. At some point, they may come home and try to sell you this pack of lies that they have been fed. If you know the truth, you’re going to want to say, “That’s not true!” I firmly believe this is exactly what our teens need. They need us to understand the issues, know what the truth is, and speak the truth to them in a loving manner, pointing them to reality, Scripture, and any number of good resources that could help them. We must stand up and expose the lies that are being fed to us daily!

In what areas are you needing to speak the truth to your teen today? Could you have the courage to boldly tell them and point them to the correct and true path? Are you ready to launch them into the world or is there more that needs to be said first?
