When your teen hits senior year, it feels like a rollercoaster for moms. I’m often approached by moms in full-blown “senior year freak-out mode,” worried they’ve missed something important. Whether your teen is homeschooled, in public, or in private school — the stress is the same.
If you’re wondering what needs to happen before graduation, this senior year checklist for moms BELOW will help you stay organized, stay on track, and breathe a little easier.

In this post, we’ll cover:
- Scheduling SAT/ACT tests
- College research and visit tips
- Senior photo shoot planning
- Graduation ceremony and party prep
- College Visits and Decision Deadlines
- What to do after college acceptance
It’s understandable, and I for sure have been there myself. So I created a senior year checklist for moms of things that you should consider if your child is now a Senior.
📌 1. Schedule SAT and ACT Tests
If your student hasn’t taken these tests yet and is considering college, register now. Many schools still require them for admission or scholarships. Retaking for a better score? Go ahead and schedule that, too.
Not sure how to prep? 👉 Read my guide on resources for studying the SAT and ACT or check out this article on the 10 steps to prepare to take the ACT.
📌 2. College Research and Visit Tips
How do you pick a college? I’m a firm believer in researching your options and creating a list. I like to build a college research spreadsheet including:
- Tuition costs
- Expected scholarships
- Available majors
- Graduate school options
- Program size and reputation
You should research the factors most important to your family.

📌 3. Senior Year Photo Shoot Planning
A lot of teens these days want a senior photo shoot, and it’s a beautiful way to mark this milestone. If you’re planning one, consider:
- Which local photographer you’ll use
- The location for the shoot
- Outfits your teen wants to wear
- Whether to include a cap and gown
- Any props or meaningful items to personalize it
📌 4. Graduation Ceremony and Party Prep
Decide how you’ll celebrate:
Does your ceremony require a slideshow? Start collecting photos by March so you’re not scrambling last minute.
Will your teen participate in a graduation ceremony?
What’s the date? Notify family and grandparents early.
Are you hosting a party or open house? Casual or fancy? Decorations and food decisions?
📌5. Visits and College decision deadlines
Still deciding on a college? Schedule preview days, admitted student days, open house events, or general tours.
Create a list of final questions to answer before making your decision. Visit those final colleges by spring break. And remember — college decisions are typically due by May 1st!
📌6. What to do after college acceptance
Once you’ve confirmed a college choice:
- Find their Admitted Student Checklist
- Send a final high school transcript
- Send any dual-enrollment transcripts
- Register for housing and orientation
- Submit immunization records and other required documents
