Math:

My favorite website for ACT prep problems is called prepscholar.com.  I bring a few of these each week to class. You can search for a specific topic in math to focus on. I enjoy working on the section called ACT Guide to Word Problems.

Interesting math plus devotional article: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2017/08/20/are-solar-eclipses-proof-god.html

Amazing and fun math video on Fibonacci’s number.

Philosophy:

Great points in “Philosophy, What’s the Use” article at https://www.classicalconversations.com/article/philosophy-whats-use  Especially the quote from Lady Gaga.  Don’t tell your kids who said it first and see if they can guess what famous person said it. They will be surprised.

Creation is amazing. Just think of all the things man couldn’t come up with if we tried! An example of this is the Fibonacci sequence. Watching just the first 5 minutes of this 13 minute video is enough to see the incredible fingerprint of God.   (Job 38-42)

Ask your student what was Plato’s cave?  Is the earth being, becoming or both at the same time?  What did Plato think was the role of education?

Shakespeare/Poetry:

Here is a great Encouragement poem about not quitting. It’s a great poem to post somewhere or keep in your notebook. “Don’t Quit,” by Edgar Guest.

See if you can find anaphora in this poem: “The Passionate Shepherd To His Love,” by Christopher Marlowe.

What does the title of Much Ado About Nothing mean? Why is it significant? What different kinds of love does Shakespeare represent in the play through Claudio?

See if your student can tell you what cuckoldry means. I was actually watching my 80s British detective show one night “Inspector Morse” and a character actually said “cuckold”. It’s also in the Netflix series “The Crown”. Ha. I knew what it meant! 😉

Discuss the 5 Common topics of Invention and how we can use those in leading discussions, coming up with essays and research papers.

Here’s a couple of clips on Much Ado you might enjoy!

History:

Topics you can discuss are: colonial life, slavery, Georgia, how the colonies were governed.   Ask them what colonial life was like in terms of education, religion, government, art, music and also what it was like to be a slave.  Ask them why colonists were able to justify slavery in their minds. You should be able to come up with at least 5 reasons.
Highly recommend the movie Amazing Grace about William Wilberforce and the British slave trade that he gave his life to abolish it.  Also highly recommend the books 7 Men and Amazing Grace by Eric Metaxas, one of my favorite authors. Both books cover William Wilberforce and the movie is based off his books.

Here are a couple of youtube videos about the American slave trade that explain it.

I highly recommend watching the Roots Miniseries (the old one from the 80s) for a good look at the slavery system. It is very hard to watch though. Not for the fainthearted. And probably biased. But it definitely helped me understand the brutality of the slave owners, the harshness of the boats and life on the plantation.
