Here are some resources for Week 8.

Philosophy:

We are talking about death and the premature deaths of children. You might want to ask your student what they think about this topic. We are starting to discuss the problem of evil – why there is so much suffering? If God is all good, why does He allow evil? If God is all-powerful, why doesn’t He stop it? Evil is a problem for all people – both believers and nonbelievers. We are all going to have stories of suffering throughout our lives. How do atheists deal with the problem of evil – they say there is no God. Why is this nonsense? The Order in the Universe – it can’t all be random. What examples are there in the Bible on suffering? Joseph, Job, Jesus on the cross, Daniel

We are discussing Berkley and David Hume this week.  What does it mean “to be is to be perceived.”? Are there any innate ideas? Can we know God if we can’t perceive Him? What is a miracle? Is birth a miracle or a natural law? What is our view of life? Rom 1:18  Atheists are suppressing the truth.  Is truth relative? What is the law of casuality?   What is a skeptic and how do they find truth?

What if we take out the miracles of the Bible? Is it still the Bible? That’s what Thomas Jefferson did.

Here is a video about a woman who recently went through suffering. She lost her husband two years ago and she has 3 little boys.  She has just recenlty remarried a widowed man and they now have 5 kids. Her instagram account is a great encouragement as she walks through suffering and pain but yet still trusts in God. (@BrittanyBPrice)

Shakespeare/Poetry:
We listened to Alexander Pope’s poem, “The Dying Christian to His Soul” .  You can hear it here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzYZkI1qtmo&index=23&list=PLP8jCJGhr-o_r6Sesd9MLiqYJ5Ofv-scq

Talk about parallelism and how this applies to poetry, Psalms and Proverbs, and it’s on the SAT!  “O Death where is thy sting, O Grave where is thy victory?”  Most students will know what parallelism is from other writing curricula they have had prior to this year.

We started discussing Julius Caesar.  Such an interesting play with many famous quotes, like “the fault in our stars” and “it’s all greek to me”. Discuss the key themes we will be looking at: What makes a good leader? Friendship. How far would you go if your friend was hurting your country? Betrayal.  How much revenge would you take if someone destroyed your friend?  Suicide. Fate and Superstition. These are all great things to talk to your student about.

Don’t forget you can listen to Shakespeare plays for free on www.Librivox.org.

History:
We are studying the Monroe presidency, Jackson getting Florida from Spain, the Monroe Doctrine, the Missouri Compromise, and what the South needed to do to keep Slavery in the south. We discussed strict constructionism, nullification, and the spoils system.  Those are important vocabulary words that your student should know by now. We talked about why the South needed the Senate and the President to be pro-slavery.

This has great parallels to today when we are talking about a president who could potentially appoint the next 2-3 Supreme Court Justices.

Here is a Democrat article on why some wanted Hillary to become president and appoint the justices:

Here is a Republican article on Trump and the list he published during his campaign of the justices he would pull from for SCOTUS.
