Math:

Here is a link for studying types of Word problems on the ACT. http://blog.prepscholar.com/act-math-word-problems

Philosophy:

Ask your student what Aristotle’s view of God was and compare that to our view of God.  Look up Ex 2:23-25 about how our God is different than Aristotle.  He heard their cries, remembered His covenant, saw them and took notice of them. A very personal God!  Discuss how people today have a philosophical wisdom vs. a biblical wisdom, resorting to cute inspirational memes, but not the true words from the Bible. What was Aristotle’s background and history?  How was Aristotle’s God like the KIng of England?

Shakespeare / Poetry:

Listen to this famous Sonnet 18 by Shakespeare “Shall I compare thee to a Summer’s Day,”

Read or listen to “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This poem as anastrophe in it. What is that literary device? What movie character uses anastrophe all the time? (Yoda) What language uses it? (latin)

Ask your student who jumped to conclusions in the play, Much Ado About Nothing, and why. Discuss the definitions of the words gulling and requited love. Discuss Dogberry’s character and how he turns what could be a tragedy into a comedy. His words are full of mistakes where he says the wrong word for something like comprehended instead of apprehended.

This is a fun clip of the movie when Benedick is gulled or tricked into loving Beatrice. Hilarious.  And yes, that is Denzel Washington!

History:
Ask your student what led to the American Revolution. Ask them what the differences were between the British army and the US army.  Ask them what made George Washington a great commander in chief. And finally, ask them what were some key points that were made in the Declaration of Independence.  See if they know what was NOT left IN the Declaration:  Thomas Jefferson had written a statement that blamed Britain for slavery existing in America. This was taken out because it made slavery sound bad and hence the South didn’t want that.

Here’s a great video about the Battle of Long Island and the amazing way George Washington evacuated 9000 troops across the Hudson River during the middle of the night, in fog and rain Many have written about this moment in history and say it was the hand of God rescuing America.

And here’s a fun schoolhouse rock video that everyone would love.

If you have not seen the John Adams documentary series produced by Tom Hanks, this is a must!! This series is good for mature-teens and adults, in my opinion. It has too much blood and other adult references for my younger kids. Other than that, it is a great way to watch how this man became a writer of the Declaration of Independence and eventually our President. Amazing to see him in the White House with the slaves and muddy streets just outside. First president to live in the White House. Here’s a link to it on Amazon Prime where it is free!

Chemistry:
Ask your student what it was like to do their first chemical reaction!
